Entering the Toxic zone-

Imagine a landscape with a largest mangrove forest, backwater, two rivers, a beautiful creek where the river and the sea meet, sand dunes, plenty of banyan trees, peepal trees, palm trees, multitudes of life including birds, marine lives, river lives and humans. Wouldn’t we call that heaven but then to come to terms with the knowledge that this mother nature all around us is poisoned because of hazardous smoke, polluting ashes and unlimited human greed is the most difficult thing to digest.

For all the south Chennai’s glittering lifestyle of power guzzling shopping malls, IT offices, high rising apartments, metros, cars etc the north Chennai is made a sacrificial goat. The North Chennai is made the Dump-yard of the Chennai city. Thermal power plants not one but two are running next to next to power the city. The air quality completely changes as we enter in to the zone. Your eyes and nose start feeling the irritation. The entire area surrounded with thick harmful smoke all through the day and night. One can see all around massive pipeline carrying coal ashes mixed with water, pipeline carrying LPG runs all through in a close proximity, there are ash sludges spread as far as one could see in what is supposed to be a river bed, the entire landscape is surrounded with dilapidated factories and buildings belching out smoke all around, a fertilizer producing factory, shipbuilding factory, cement factory, petroleum refinery,etc. The roads are rough with potholes and trees filled with cement dust, a thermal power plant sitting right in the middle of a newly built houses meant for resettling slumdwellers. It is a hell at our backyard ready to blow up anytime.

We at Agathee group unassumingly woke up in the early morning around 3:30am to go on a trip. Though bharathi thozhar had informed it is going to reveal us the hard realities of the Chennai city we were not ready for what we are going to witness for the next 5 hours. What we saw on that morning was nothing short of apocalyptic. most of us felt nauseating, breathlessness and an intense aversion. By the end of the trip some of them had a severe headache.

the question is “is this kind of trip really necessary” do we have to witness such a horrific and polluting place? why can’t we stick only visiting to organic farms and such mind quieting places. But every day it is us who wonders why are there so many people particularly those whom we know very closely are dying of cancer, why there is mushrooming of cancer clinics in the city. Why are we afraid when the rainy season comes (because it remains of the nightmare of 2015 flood, 2016 vardah cyclone where we are left to fend for ourselves). What was the reason for that flood? why is there an increasing heat waves in the summers? why are people dying out of sunstroke? why are there flash floods and followed by drought? why is there a constant power cuts at our home but the malls and mnc offices runs with full power round the clock? what is this development for and whom it is for when we can’t breathe fresh air, drink clean water and live without diseases?

There are many questions than answers but the least one can do is to start thinking what kind of place we are going to leave to our younger ones. This trip makes me think how we are caught up in the whole vicious cycle of this so-called development. Since the trip I am feeling guilty when I forget to switch of a fan or a light because that power comes from ravaging the mother earth. - Com Balamurali

--இந்த பயணத்தைப் பற்றிய பார்வை,என் அறிவுக்கு தோன்றியது--

பாரதி தோழர் இந்த வடசென்னைப் பயணத்தைப் பற்றிய பகிர்வை whatsapp-ல் பதிவிடும்போதே என் மனதில் தோன்றியது அடிக்கும் வெயிலில் வடசென்னை பகுதியா? என பின்வாங்கத்தான் நினைத்தேன். என் மூத்த மகளின் வற்புறுத்தலாலும் சென்னையில் பிறந்து வளர்ந்ததாலும், இதுவரை அந்த பகுதிகளை பார்த்ததில்லை என்றதாலும், போகலாம் என முடிவு செய்தேன். இப்படித்தான் இருக்கும் என நினைத்துச் சென்ற எனக்கு பெரிய பெரிய அதிர்ச்சிகரமான உண்மைகள்.

என் மனதையும், உடலையும் சேர்த்தே பாதித்தது.வெயிலுக்கு பயந்து கொண்டு போக வேண்டாம், வீட்டில் [AC/Fan]-ல் சொகுசாக இருக்க நினைக்கும் நான் எங்கே? சுயநலம் மிகுந்த மனிதர்களால் வட சென்னை மக்களின் உழைப்பு உறிஞ்சப்பட்டு அவர்களின் வாழ்விடங்கள் பறிக்கப்பட்டு, மின் நிலையங்களினால் சுத்தமான காற்றை கூட சுவாசிக்க முடியாமல் இருக்கும் அவா்கள் எங்கே? கண்ணுக்கெட்டிய தூரம் வரை அழகாக பரந்து விரிந்து கிடக்கும் "கொசஸ்தலை" ஆற்றின் இன்றைய நிலை சாம்பல் நிறைந்த சேற்றுப் பகுதியாக மாறி மனிதர்கள் வாழ்வதற்கு ஏற்புடையதாக இல்லை. அந்த பகுதியிலும் இடம்பெயர மனமில்லாமல் அங்கேயே அனைத்து சவால்களையும் எதிர்கொண்டு வாழும் மக்களை பற்றி நினைத்து மனம் வருந்தினேன். சென்னையின் அழிவைப் பற்றிய காட்சிகளை திரையில் மட்டுமே கண்ட எனக்கு நேரில் பார்த்த அனுபவம் பயங்கரம்.

கருவேல மரங்கள் கூட வளர ஏதுவாக இல்லாத நிலமாக, மீன்கள் இல்லாத ஆறாக, வசதிகள் இல்லாத நகரமாக,(காட்டுப்பள்ளியின் இயற்கை அழுகு ஒருபுறம் ஈர்க்க, கடற்கரை மனல் குன்றுகளின் அழகு ஒரு புறம் ஈர்க்க) இவையெல்லாம் இன்னும் எத்தனை வருடங்கள் இருக்கும் என்ற கேள்வி அனைத்து ஈர்ப்பையும் சிதறடித்தது. திருடனாய் பார்த்து திருந்தாவிட்டால் திருட்டை ஒழிக்க முடியாது அது போல ஆட்சியில் இருக்கும் மனிதர்கள் இயற்கையை சீரழிக்காமல், உலகையும், மக்களையும் ஆள நினைக்காவிட்டால் அழிவை மாற்ற முடியாது. ஏதும் அறியா குழந்தைகளுக்கு நாம் தரப்போகும் தரமில்லாத நிலத்தையும் குடிநீரையும் வாழ்வையும் நினைத்து மனம் வருந்துகிறேன். மின்சாரம், அலைபேசி, வாகனம் என எதையும் விட்டுத்தர முடியாத நிலையில் இருக்கும் நான் இதைப்பற்றி பேச தகுதியற்றவளாக உள்ளேன். அதே நேரத்தில் இவையாவும் கடந்த சந்ததி மூலம் எனக்கு தெரிந்த, கற்ற, பாடங்களே தவிர நானே தேடி சென்றதல்ல. அதுபோல அடுத்த சந்ததிக்கு நான் தரப் போகும் பாடம் என்ன?
